Let’s start with Sinister (2012). You may judge the year of its release, but I can say that this movie is actually great. It tells about a true crime writer who moves into a house with his family, only to find disturbing footage that connects to a series of grisly murders. The vibe is dark, intense, and pretty chilling. The horror is built not just by jump scares, but also by the atmosphere and the mystery behind the tape recordings. It’s definitely worth watching if you're into unsettling plots.

The second list came from The Babadook (2014). The Babadook introduced a new horror figure that resembled a boogeyman, which haunted a child and his mother through a mysterious storybook. What makes this movie unique is how it plays with psychological horror. It shows how grief and trauma can manifest into something terrifying. It may not be for everyone, but if you like horror with deeper meaning, this one could stick in your mind.

Third list came from a slasher horror movie, Hush (2016). This movie tells about a deaf writer who lives alone and far from any neighborhood. The silence in this movie plays a big role in creating the tension. Since the main character can’t hear anything, you’re forced to feel what she feels when danger comes. It’s simple but effective, and the pacing makes it more thrilling than you might expect.

Another hidden gem is The Autopsy of Jane Doe (2016). This movie tells about an autopsy of Jane Doe, which is a term used by any females that does not have identities to be investigated. The autopsy was urgently required that night by the sheriff, thus they may know what causes the tragedy of a murderer of a family in a house. The terror of the autopsy really causes goosebumps on your neck. This movie reckons jumpscares, so you may prepare any pillows to cover your face and ear.

The last list came from a movie that was set in the early 19th century, 1922 (2017). This movie does not contain any ghosts or psychopath from out of nowhere, you may be wondering why this movie is horror kind. 1922 is adapted from Stephen King’s novella, which explores guilt and madness more than traditional ghost stories. What can cause this movie horror when it is about a very happy family of husband, wife, and son, with hectares of land that make them rich. Personally, I love the way it is narrated by the main character’s POV and gradually build the terror for each event caused by his decisions. You may find it regretful and make you protest about the father's decision at the very beginning.
